Words & Phrases

  • I had to move my outdoor plants, the strong sunlight was causing their leaves to drop.

  • It was so hot yesterday that I was dozing in front of the TV.

    • Doze (verb); to sleep lightly or nap for a short period, often unintentionally or in a relaxed setting.

  • I want to see that movie, it looks really interesting. (This means, from what you’ve seen (maybe a trailer or poster), the movie seems fun, exciting, or worth watching.)

    • The movie is based on an original story.

    • Some film students wanted to (hire / rent) my house to shoot something.

  • On the news, I saw a short segment that featured the Asao area.

    • Someone I know was featured in the program.

  • Kuchō (区長) can be called “ward chief” or “ward mayor”.

  • The doctor said it would take another half month for it to completely heal.

    • The bone is mostly (mended / knitted).

    • “Mended” means healed or repaired; this is natural and common for everyday conversation,

    • “Knitted” refers to how the bone tissues have grown back together; often used by doctors or in medical writing.

  • They spend summers at their second home in the mountains.

  • The ground freezes about 1 metre down.

Appropriate Language

  • Second home; General terms

    • vacation home; Used when the second house is mainly for holidays

    • weekend home; A second house mainly used on weekends

  • Second home; Location / Function

    • cottage; Small, often rural or countryside house

    • cabin; Rustic second house, often in forest or mountains

    • Villa;  Large, luxurious second house (esp. in warm regions)

    • getaway; Emphasizes escape or relaxation
