Words & Phrases

  • “Today's forecast was on the mark.” (= 100% accurate)

    • "Today's forecast was spot on.”

    • "The weather report was right on the money.” (A classic idiom meaning perfectly precise)

  • I think octopus and erasers have the same texture. They are both overly chewy.

  • One evening, we decided to do some restaurant hopping. We grabbed snacks at the first spot, appetizers at a second, and wrapped up with entrees at the final place.

    • We went bar hopping downtown. (= moving from place to place for drinks)

  • Life is too short to be drinking cheap wine.

  • On hot summer days, (iced / ice / cold) green tea is the best.

Grammar

  • Grammatically, the word "iced" acts as a participle (a verb turned into an adjective) that describes what was done to the tea. The tea was brewed hot, and then it was iced (chilled with ice).

    • However the terms have changed over time

    • Iced cream —> ice cream

    • Iced water —> ice water

    • skimmed milk —> skim milk

    • waxed paper —> wax paper
