Words & Phrases

  • I’ve just recovered, but I’m not 100% yet.

    • I had a fever, so I worried about having influenza or COVID-19.

    • The doctor said you can be contagious for up to 10 days. It might have been whooping cough (百日咳 ).

  • Was your voice hoarse because of your cold?

    • My throat was hoarse from shouting loudly at the concert.

  • I had to take kids’ cough medicine. It’s sweeter than the adult version.

  • In Canada, the name ‘saskatoon berry’ is more common, while Americans usually say ‘juneberry’.

  • I have a lime cutting I am trying to grow.

    • I took a cutting from a blueberry bush to grow it.

    • I have a small cutting from a rose I am trying to grow.

  • On the weekend, I went and practiced (golfing / golf).

  • Did you (take / study) French at school?

    • At school she studied German.

    • Is your son still in school?

  • I think I experienced discrimination at a restaurant in Paris years ago.

Grammar

  • We say “at school” when we talk about the place where learning happens; you study a subject “at school”

  • We say “in school” when we mean someone is going to school or is a student there.
