Words & Phrases

  • Two weeks ago, there was a heatwave, but now the temperature is back to normal.

  • Did you see the industrial chimney that (fell down / collapsed) in the earthquake?

  • In high school, we visited Mt. Aso.

    • We went to Mt. Aso on a high school (field) trip.

    • Field Trip / School Trip (Noun Phrase) = A trip made by students and teachers to study a subject firsthand, visit educational sites, or participate in group activities.

  • Earthquakes can (strike / hit) anywhere and anytime.

  • Mother Nature is getting angry with us. There have been so many earthquakes, wildfires, and other natural disasters.

  • There are a lot of blackouts across Kumamoto because of the earthquake.

    • Many places across Kumamoto are without power.

  • Regular Japanese yogurt is too watery, so I prefer to buy Greek yogurt.

    • I like Greek yogurt, it’s thick and delicious.

    • All you need to do is mix a yogurt starter with some milk and leave it on the counter until it’s ready. After that, put it in the fridge.

Be careful with sentence structure

Pronunciation

  • Collapsed (verb / adjective) kəˈlæpst / kuh-LAPST

Appropriate Language

  • Use "Have you ever + past participle…" to ask about past events, for life experiences up to the present moment.

    • Have you ever visited Kumamoto Castle?

    • Have you ever had any pets?

    • You’ve been to Paris several times. Have you ever seen any famous people?
