Words & Phrases
I wanted to try the new donut, and I happened to find it a few days later.
“Mochurin" is a line of pillowy soft, hollow mochi donuts.
The serving style changed since I last went.
How (did / has) it changed?
One of my friends booked a table early, so I think you need a booking to eat there. (You will also hear “reserve” and “reservation”)
The tomato-based stew has a light flavour.
“Rich flavour” = the dish has a deep, satisfying, complex taste
“Heavy flavour” = when a food feels substantial or leaves a strong aftertaste
“Strong flavour” = when a specific ingredient stands out immediately, like garlic, onions, sharp cheese, or heavy spices
Grammar
Walk By (Specifically using your feet)= You are walking, and you see something on your left or right side as you walk away.
"Every morning, I walk by a beautiful bakery on my way to school.”
“I walked by a long ling at the donut shop.”
Pass By (Using any transportation) = This is a general word. You can walk, drive a car, or ride a bicycle near a place.
"We passed by the stadium in our car.”
“While I was on my bicycle, I passed by my friend carrying some flowers.”
Walk Through (Using your feet) = You walk inside a building, a room, or an area, and exit out the other side.
"To get to the garden, we have to walk through the kitchen.”
“The cafe is on the other side of the station, so let’s walk through it.”
Pass Through (General movement) = You go across a space, a city, or a country to get to a different destination.
"The train passed through a long, dark tunnel.”
“It’s starting to rain, let’s pass through the department store where it’ll be dry.”
Appropriate Language
Short Greetings (Casual)
“How’s it going?” (= How are you?)
“What’s up?” (The standard answer is usually “Not much, you?”)
“Good to see you!” (Don’t use with strangers)
Short Goodbyes (Casual)
“See you later.” / “See you soon.” (The standard for daily life)
“Take care!” (Warm and friendly)
“Catch you later! (Common among younger speakers)
“Have a good one!” (This can be used to mean a good day, a good weekend, a good evening, a good trip etc)
