Words & Phrases

  • I twisted my back getting out of the bed the other morning.

    • My sciatic nerve feels pinched. Now my lower back has a dull ache.

  • Wellness Centres usually have practices like acupuncture, massage therapy, herbal medicine, cupping, and others.

    • The wellness centre offers yoga classes, acupuncture, and nutrition counselling.

    • I go to a wellness centre twice a month for physiotherapy and meditation.

  • A manual therapy technique, like hip bone manipulation, is where the therapist uses their hands to move or adjust the bones and soft tissues. It’s typically done by a physiotherapist, chiropractor, or osteopath.

  • I had a really heavy (resistance) stepper before.

  • I bought a treadmill for the house, but seldom ever used it.

  • We had an exercise bike, but we got rid of it a few months ago.

  • The shopping channel people always have a lot of gusto for the products they’re shilling.

    • Gusto (noun); Great enjoyment, enthusiasm, or energy in doing something.

    • Shilling (verb); Promoting or endorsing something (often a product) in a way that seems overly eager or dishonest

  • Butterfly (noun, informal); Someone who flits from one interest or activity to another, like a butterfly moving between flowers.

    • He’s a butterfly when it comes to hobbies, never settling down.

  • Flake (noun, informal); Someone unreliable who often abandons commitments or changes plans suddenly.

    • He’s a bit of a flake, always quitting projects halfway.

  • The city just announced that the air quality is bad.

    • There is a smog warning in effect.

    • ‘Smog’ is a blend of two words ‘smoke’ and ‘fog’ and was counted in 1905.

Appropriate Language

Weather-related contexts, the order of severity from least to most serious

  • Notice = Just information. No danger.

  • Advisory = Something might be inconvenient or mildly hazardous. Stay informed.

    • Heat advisory, snow advisory.

  • Alert / Watch = Conditions are right for something serious to happen, so be on the lookout.

    • Flood alert, tornado watch.

  • Warning = The danger is happening now or is about to happen. Take action immediately.

    • Tsunami warning, severe thunderstorm warning.

  • Emergency = Serious and active danger. Immediate action needed

  • Evacuation Order
