Words & Phrases

  • This summer is too hot. I heard on the news that yesterday was the hottest day in Hachioji.

  • In my hometown area, a lot of outdoor activities were cancelled due to the heatwave.

    • The area issued a severe heatstroke warning.

  • A kid collapsed at the side of the pool from heatstroke.

    • Collapse (verb); Fell down suddenly, often due to weakness, damage, or pressure.

    • She collapsed from exhaustion after the long race.

  • The city just announced that the air quality is bad.

    • There is a smog warning in effect.

    • ‘Smog’ is a blend of two words ‘smoke’ and ‘fog’ and was counted in 1905.

Dates & Numbers

  • Sixth sɪksθ (one syllable)

  • Twelfth twɛlfθ (one syllable)

    • If you are having trouble pronouncing these, a good practice is to slow your pronunciation down

    • siiiiikssth

      • Start with a clear “siii”, stretch it

      • Move to a soft /k/ then hold the /s/

      • Finish with tongue gently between the teeth for /θ/

    • tweeeellfthhh

      • Start with a stretched tweeell, almost like “well”

      • Let the /f/ blend into /θ/ by slowly pulling the tongue out to touch the teeth
