Topic: Talking About Travel

In this lesson, students will develop vocabulary and conversation skills by talking about travel and focusing on Thailand.

Lesson Notes July 28, 2026 (Elementary)

Words & Phrases

• It’s a lot better to water plants in the morning rather than the afternoon.

• I thought the song was fast, and I couldn’t turn on time.

Appropriate Language

Typically answers to “Which do you prefer A or B?”

• “I prefer [A] to [B].”

  • Remember to use "to" instead of "than" with the verb prefer (e.g., "I prefer coffee to tea”).

• "I like [A] better than [B].”

  • "I like summer better than winter because it's warm.”

• "I’d rather (have/choose) [A].”

  • "I'd rather stay home than go out tonight.”

• "Definitely [A]! It's much [more adjective].”

  • "Definitely dogs! They are much friendlier.”

• When the student likes both options equally:

  • "I like both!"

  • "Both are great, so it’s hard to choose."

  • "It depends on [the situation / my mood]."

Try this simple 3-step formula:

• Answer→Reason (because…)→Example/Detail

  • Teacher: "Which do you prefer, tea or coffee?”
    Student: "I prefer coffee to tea (Answer) because it gives me energy in the morning (Reason). I usually drink two cups every day! (Detail)"*

Travel

• If I go sunbathing my skin breaks out and then peels badly. ("Breaks out" usually refers to getting acne, pimples, or a skin rash)

• I hate to use (outhouses / port-a-potties).

  • Port-a-potties: portable plastic toilet stalls you see at outdoor concerts, festivals, parks, and construction sites

  • Outhouses: small, permanent wooden structures built over a hole in the ground, usually found in remote rural areas, wilderness campsites, or old cabins without indoor plumbing.
