Words & Phrases

  • I was outside for a few minutes and the sun felt really intense on my face.

    • Everywhere in our area is boiling hot today.

  • On Sunday I bought six pots of flowers.

  • At karaoke, I want to sing songs that are newtome, not just recent releases.

    • I want to sing classic songs that I've never tried before, rather than new hits. (See “Appropriate Language”)

  • When did that group start? (= how long has the group been around?)

    • Does the teacher assign you to vocal (sections / groups)?

    • I watch some YouTube videos on how to breathe and project while singing.

    • Going to karaoke helps release my stress.

      • (Idiom) It helps me wind down. (= relax)

  • Wind Down (Phrasal Verb / Noun) =  To gradually relax, calm down, or rest after a period of intense activity, excitement, or work. (Synonyms: Decompress, unwind, chill out, relax, settle down.)

    • Going to karaoke when I am feeling stressed really helps me wind down.

    • Reading a book and drinking a cup of hot tea is a great way to wind down after a long week.

    • Enthusiasm for the World Cup wound down after Japan got eliminated.

  • He thinks that doing exercise feels relaxing. (A little wordy, but correct)

    • He feels relaxed doing exercise. (Best option)

  • I am at the age where my body is falling apart. (This is natural and funny)

    • Is doing jump rope good for your health?

Appropriate Language

  • Classical songs: This refers specifically to art music or traditional orchestral vocal music—think Mozart, Bach, opera, or choral choir music

  • Classic songs: This refers to older, famous, and beloved songs from popular culture—think "classic rock" from the 70s, legendary pop hits, or old karaoke favourites
