Words & Phrases

  • The movie was released earlier this year.

  • The appetizer was delicious. There was a soup and two small sides.

    • The risotto was baked in the oven, giving it a crunchy top and a creamy inside. (Here “creamy” is a better description than “soft”)

    • The meal cost ¥3500 (with / including) tax.

  • I know a lot of restaurants because of my music (class) friends. (A smoother version would be “my friends from music class”)

  • We’ve been talking and we will probably go there, but we haven’t booked it yet.

  • In a lot of European cities, there is no space for outdoor air conditioner units.

    • Often this is because of strict local heritage preservation laws (which ban altering the look of old buildings).

  • Numb (Adjective) = no physical feeling, typically as a result of cold, injury, or anesthesia

    • The dentist injected a local anesthetic to numb my lower jaw before starting the root canal procedure.

    • After hiking through the freezing mountain rain, my hands were so numb that I couldn't even tie my boot laces.

    • My legs were really numb after sitting through a long tea ceremony.

Grammar

The word "yet" has very strict rules in English

  • Rule 1: Use it for questions.

    • "Have you left the house yet?"

  • Rule 2: Use it for negative statements.

    • "I haven't eaten lunch yet."
