Words & Phrases

  • My knee hurt, but I put on a medicated patch and it felt better.

  • I’m carrying a little stress this week because of work.

    • Synonyms: be under / be feeling / have been under

  • If you keep really old coins and bills they might become more valuable.

  • Years ago, I sold some gold jewelry and other things and made a profit.

    • Synonyms: it was profitable

    • If I had them now, I would make more money.

  • Was it 18 carat gold?

    • Carat is often used in jewelry and gold to indicate size and value.

  • If I wear any type of rings, my fingers end up swelling.

    • I can’t wear rings these days because my knuckles are swollen.

  • On and off (adverb / phrase) = happening intermittently; starting and stopping repeatedly over a period of time rather than continuously.

    • It rained on and off throughout the afternoon.

    • They’ve been dating on and off for years.

    • I’ve had a headache on and off since yesterday.

  • Tag along (phrasal verb) = to describe accompanying someone, especially when you are not the main participant.

    • My husband and I tagged along with a local walking circle last week.

    • Can I tag along when you go to the bookstore?

    • She didn’t plan to join us but ended up tagging along anyway.

Appropriate Language

  • Accessories; a broader category of items that add or complete an outfit

    • Examples: jewelry, watches, scarves, belts, hats, bags, sunglasses, etc

  • Jewelry; items worn on the body, usually made of metal or gemstones

    • Examples: rings, necklaces, earrings, bracelets, etc

    • Note: ‘Jewelry’ is an uncountable noun

  • Differences between ‘dinner’ and ‘supper’

    • “Dinner” is the main meal of the day and is often eaten in the evening.

    • “Supper” is a light evening meal and is usually smaller and more casual than dinner.
