Appropriate Language

Swing = move back and forth with energy, often in a wider arc

  • Usually faster or stronger, often hangs from something

    • The door was swinging in the wind.

    • The child was swinging on the swing.

    • His arms swung as he walked.

Sway = move slowly and gently from side to side

  • Softer, smoother movement, often caused by wind or music, usually upright objects

    • The trees were swaying in the breeze.

    • She swayed to the music.

    • The tall building swayed slightly.
