Appropriate Language

    • ‘Operation’ is the most common everyday word for surgery. Doctors and patients often use this word in conversation.

  • ‘Procedure’ is a broader and softer word. It means a medical action or treatment, and it does not always involve cutting. It is often used by doctors when they want to sound careful or neutral.

  • ‘Exercise equipment’ includes anything used for exercise, from machines to small, portable items. Dumbbells, resistance bands, yoga mats, kettlebells, and skipping ropes are all exercise equipment. ‘Exercise machines’ are included within this category, but not all equipment is a machine.
