Words & Phrases
I grow tomatoes in my garden.
They have grown flowers in the backyard.
We don’t say ‘grown up vegetables’. The phrase ‘grow up’ is used for people or animals, not plants. For plants, we just say ‘grow’.
There has been a lot of news about bears recently, especially them taking farmers’ food. (We say ‘news about something’, not 'news of’.)
There has been a lot of news about the weather lately.
There has been a lot of news about the festival in the city.
Ring (verb) = to make a clear sound, usually of a bell or similar object.
The church bell will ring at noon.
Every New Year the local temple rings their bell.
The wedding venue rang a bell signalling everyone to find their seat for dinner.
My trip to Nagano was only six days, so it wasn’t long enough to meet my old friends.
My cousin’s daughter is the only relative living in Nagano.
There is a three-story pagoda near the centre of the town.
We visited a beautiful five-story pagoda in Kyoto.
The pagoda’s multiple tiers reached high into the sky.
Many pagodas were built as part of Buddhist temple complexes.
Look forward to (phrasal verb) = to feel excited or pleased about something that is going to happen. (Synonyms: anticipate, await eagerly, be excited about)
I’m really looking forward to visiting Kyoto next spring.
She looks forward to meeting her old classmates at the reunion.
We all look forward to the festival every year because it’s so lively.
Outing (noun) = a short trip or excursion, usually for leisure, pleasure, or educational purposes
We went on a family outing to the seaside last weekend.
The school organized an outing to the local museum for the students.
On their day off, they planned a small outing to the nearby mountains.
