Lesson Notes August 12, 2025 (Vocabulary Building)

Words & Phrases

  • The sea park gave us simple raincoats. The seawater stung my eyes.

    • We saw a lovely beluga whale and could touch it.

  • We used the Aqua Line to get to Chiba. (Only use ‘pass’ when you ‘go around’ or avoid something)

  • I heard about it from my daughter-in-law’s father. (This is simpler than saying ‘my son’s wife’s father)

    • My brother-in-law’s parents had a second house in the countryside.

  • I don’t have anything planned for this summer.

    • I have nothing planned for this summer.

    • My husband’s and my schedules are opposite this summer.

  • One of my friends is going to perform ballet later this week. (“one of my friends’ is a singular phrase, not a plural phrase)

Vocabulary

  • Astonishing (adj) əˈstɒn.ɪ.ʃɪŋ / as-TON-ish-ing = Very surprising or amazing, causing great surprise

    • t’s astonishing how fast technology changes these days.

    • She gave an astonishing performance in the play last night.

  • Mighty (adjective / adverb) = Very strong, powerful, or impressive; used to emphasize something

    • The mighty river flowed through the valley.

    • He gave a mighty shout to get everyone’s attention.

  • Finest (adjective / noun) = Of the highest quality or best kind; the best example of something

    • She wore the finest dress to the party.

    • This restaurant serves some of the finest sushi in Tokyo.
