Words & Phrases

  • I went to the movies a couple of times in the last couple of weeks.

  • I thought the movie was based on a true story.

    • Was the movie fiction or non-fiction?

  • I dropped into Book Off to look for a book.

    • I sent a package to my family by express mail.

  • Express mail can be quicker but more expensive.

  • Gion festival has a total 34 floats.

    • The floats are assembled and dissembled each year.

  • I’ve heard on the news that there is a shortage of matcha.

  • We walked around the (temple / shrine) grounds, it was so beautiful.

  • The shrine is famous for its moss garden.

  • I haven’t received the VISA for my trip yet, and I’m supposed to leave in two days.

    • Worst case scenario, I can get a landing VISA when I arrive.

  • You can apply for the VISA online, but you need to go to the embassy to pick it up.

  • The immigration officials are very laid-back.

  • When you go trekking what are the most important things to bring?

  • The powder dissolves in water easily. (‘Melt’ is not suitable in this sense)

Appropriate Language

  • Thread (noun); very thin fibre used mainly for sewing or stitching

    • Used for: clothing, hand sewing, embroidery

    • I need some red thread to sew this button back on.

  • String (noun); thin cord made of twisted fibres, stronger than thread

    • Used for: tying packages, hanging things, crafts

    • He tied the recycling with a piece of string.

  • Rope (noun); thick, strong cord made by twisting many fibres or threads together

    • Used for: climbing, lifting, pulling, boats

    • The mountain climber held tightly onto the rope.
