Words & Phrases

  • I came back Thursday of last week.

    • Two days after getting back I had terrible jet lag, my body felt heavy and my head was fuzzy.

    • For two days I felt bad. On the third day, I started to feel better. By the fourth day, I was fine.

  • The tour guide was very knowledgeable about everything we saw on the group tour. (NOT tour conductor)

    • The one older lady who was travelling alone relied on the tour guide for assistance.

  • When we travelled between cities, there was nothing but olive trees stretching as far as the eye could see. (= a vast, uninterrupted distance)

  • You should try to get tickets for famous locations in advance. If not, it might be tricky on the day you want to go.

    • If you can only see the outside and cannot enter, you'll only get half the experience. (= an incomplete impression)

  • Moorish geometric tile work in Alhambra is very intricate. (= very complicated or detailed)

  • I felt that if the flamenco singer was not good, the entire performance would be ruined.

  • I think the tree you were talking about is called “Judas tree”, which might be “セイヨウハナズオウ” or “カツラ”

  • Intricate (adjective) ˈɪn.trɪ.kət / IN-tri-kut

Appropriate Language

  • Tour Guide vs. Tour Conductor

    • While "conductor" is a word used for people who lead orchestras or check tickets on trains, it is almost never used for travel tours.

    • Tour Guide: The most common term for someone who explains the history and sights.

    • Tour Leader/Director: Often used for the person who manages the logistics and schedule for the whole group.
