Words & Phrases

  • Part (noun / verb) = to divide the hair into two distinct sections using a comb or fingers.

    • He used a fine-toothed comb to create a sharp part on the left side of his head for the wedding.

    • Middle parts have surged in popularity recently, replacing the deep side parts that dominated the previous decade.

  • I got my haircut two weekends ago.

    • I don’t like getting my hair cut. It’s a bit of a hassle to get to my hair salon. (= a chore, a boring job you have to do)

  • The parking space is so narrow that I need to inch my way out. (= to move very slowly and carefully)

    • I had trouble squeezing out of the train today. It was so packed. (= to physically push or wiggle through a small space)

  • The road is so narrow that it’s hard for cars to pass.

  • One part of the test you need to drive over an obstacle and then hit the brakes quickly.

    • When you do your driving test you should pay attention to all the signs.

  • “I don’t drive.” (= a choice or habit)

    • Maybe you don’t have a car, or you simply choose not to drive for environmental or personal reasons

  • “I can’t drive.” (= lack the ability or permission)

    • You never learned, no valid driver’s license, too tired, had a couple of drinks, bad medical condition etc

  • The new parking system has reduced congestion.

  • There is a mandatory lecture and practical driving session required for license renewal.

  • Many countries now have a cognitive function test for drivers 75 and above. It’s a test to evaluate memory and judgment to identify risks of dementia.
