Words & Phrases

  • I visited six different cities, and each city has its own famous building.

  • The one small village was like a Greek Island, with white walls everywhere.

  • The light passing through the stained glass windows cast vibrant patterns of red and blue across the floor of the Sagrada Família.

    • The Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona is the concert hall featuring a famous, large, inverted stained glass dome that resembles a sun or central chandelier.

  • The mixture of Islamic and Gothic architecture was unique and really impressed me.

    • Inside some cathedrals the mix of Christian and Islamic designs was impressive.

  • The meat on the ox tail was so tender and delicious.

  • In Spain, it is still (day)light at seven or eight in the evening.

Appropriate Language

  • Shabby (adjective) = In poor condition due to long or hard use, neglect, or age; wearing worn or threadbare clothes.

    • The old armchair looked quite shabby after years of being scratched by the cat, with the fabric fraying at the corners.

    • He felt a bit shabby arriving at the formal dinner in his faded jeans and a tattered sweater.

  • Dilapidated (adjective) = A state of despair or ruin as a result of age or neglect, often used for buildings or spaces

    • The city council issued a warning to the owner of the dilapidated warehouse, citing it as a safety hazard to the neighbourhood.

    • The hikers stumbled upon a dilapidated cabin in the woods, its roof partially caved in and its windows long since shattered.

  • Fed up (adjective/phrasal verb) = Bored, annoyed, or disappointed, especially by a situation that has continued for too long.

    • The Odakyu commuters became increasingly fed up with the persistent delays every morning.

    • After three hours of waiting in the rain for the parade to begin, the young family was completely fed up and decided to return home.
