January 20, 2022

The images below tell the story of what I saw as I walked around Tokyo on January 20th, 2022.

What did you do on this day?

I walked a large loop around Komae, and limited myself to twenty photos, for a total of seven kilometres. It was a mostly bright day, but there was a chill in the air. I hadn’t taken any photographs in well over a month, and I felt sluggish. I wasn’t seeing much beyond the same scenes - bright sun on colourful containers.

How do you feel about the photos a year later?

Although I felt out of practice on this day, I still feel that my best work is made from repeated visits, and being close to home. The goal of this project is not to come away with mind blowing images, but in noticing the yearly changes; the property that is still empty, the vines and weeds that are spreading, and the fading colours. Being present enough to notice those changes, that is the reward of doing this every year.
