January 20, 2018

The images below tell the story of what I saw as I walked around Tokyo on January 20th, 2018.

What did you do on this day?

This marked the fourth year of my project. During previous years I had spent the entire day photographing, however due to work constraints I opted to limit myself to 24 frames and explore a single area. Making that change felt like a cop-out, however over the past year I have come to realize the importance for projects to evolve overtime. As much as people want their lives to stay the same, that can quickly become mundane which can have dire results for one’s mental health and well-being. Make small changes, if it doesn’t feel right you can always course correct back.

How do you feel about the photos a year later?

Except for one photograph this year’s photographs marked a departure from my typical style, no longer am I including individuals in many of my compositions. This has been a gradual change from previous years, and is an added challenge in any densely populated city. As with any day of going out to make photographs, there are one or two images that stand out to me, for which I am happy to have. The remainder of the photographs, and the ones I have not selected to share, are a constant reminder to continue exploring, and to keep making photographs.
