Words & Phrases

• After the earthquake there was an emergency alert about heavy rain. (= “alerts” are usually send out by cities and governments)

  • What time did that alert (come through / go off)?

  • One of my weather apps sends me emergency notifications way too often. (“notifications” are sent by apps)

• We’ve had a record breaking 35 consecutive days of rain. There has been nearly triple the monthly average rain fall.

• I am thinking of joining a local gym to work out. (“work out” general term for physical exercise at a gym)

  • My friend is training for a marathon, so they go to the gym to do their running.

• Did you catch the result of the 4x100m relay yesterday? (= four by one-hundred metre)

  • I don’t like running, but I like watching track events. (= running events on a track, different from “marathons”)

• He is (emotionally / physically / mentally) (strong / weak).

• In sumo there have been allegations of (match fixing / match throwing). (“Yaochou” is used for matching-fixing or fake bouts, while “match throwing” is when someone intentionally loses)

• In our neighbourhood, one household is in charge of looking after the garbage collection area for an entire year. (“Duty” sounds too formal or heavy in conversation)

  • We place garbage at the end of our driveways in my city.
