Words & Phrases

  • Tama city is near my area.

    • Tama City is close to my area.

  • We walked from Shinjuku to Yoyogi-Uehara yesterday. It took us a little over an hour.

  • In the middle of the park is the Maeda Residence. (See Grammar below)

  • We went to see a Shiko Munakata exhibit at a Japan Folk Craft Museum.

    • He was a woodblock printmaker during Showa era.

  • A lot of their land was seized by the Tokyo government after the war.

    • Seized (verb – past tense of seize) = to take hold of something quickly, forcibly, or legally

      • The police seized the stolen goods from the suspect’s house.

      • She suddenly seized his hand to stop him from leaving.

  • Dumbwaiter (noun) = a small freight elevator or lift used to carry food, dishes, or other items between floors in a building

    • This old house had a dumbwaiter, which was very unique for the Showa era.

    • We sent the laundry up to the bedrooms using the dumbwaiter.

    • Old hotels often had dumbwaiters to move luggage between floors.

Grammar

  • When we talk about a house, building, or residence connected to a family name, we usually use “the + family name + Residence/House”
