Words & Phrases

  • Are your allergies bad? (This asks about how strong the symptoms are)

    • My symptoms are not so serious.

  • I went to a gospel concert last weekend, where my friend performed.

    • I chose a gift that could be added to a bath.

    • I’ve heard that after the (show / performance) the performers have a party.

  • I went down a rabbit hole checking about Twiggy and then The Beatles. (“Go down a rabbit hole” is an informal phrase. It means you start looking at something and then keep going, learning more and more, often getting distracted.)

Appropriate Language

  • Stage (verb) = to organize, present, or put on an event, performance, or protest

    • The theatre company staged a new play last month.

    • They staged a protest outside the government building.

    • The museum staged an exhibition of contemporary art.

Grammar Review

  • Minority (noun) = a smaller group within a larger population, often distinguished by race, religion, culture, or opinion

    • The ethnic minority in the region has its own unique traditions.

    • Only a minority of students chose to participate in the survey.

    • Laws were introduced to protect the rights of minority communities.

  • It’s common to use “the majority of”, “a minority of” and “plenty of”

  • Argumentative (adj) ˌɑːrɡ.jʊˈmen.tə.tɪv / ar-gu-MEN-ta-tive

  • Not at all (phrase) = used to emphasize that something is not true, or to politely respond that something is no problem

    • “Are you upset with me?” “Not at all, don’t worry.”

    • It’s not at all surprising that she won the competition.

    • Thank you for your help. “Not at all, happy to assist.”

  • Memory (noun) is the ability to remember things

    • I have a good memory for faces.

    • My memory of last summer is very clear.

    • Childhood memories are often happy.

  • Recall (verb)is to remember something, often with effort

    • I can’t recall his name right now.

    • She recalled the day she met her best friend.

    • Can you recall what happened yesterday?

  • Remind (verb) is to make someone remember something

    • Please remind me to call my doctor.

    • This song reminds me of my childhood.

    • Can you remind her about the meeting?
