Lesson Notes October 6, 2026 (TUESDAY ZOOM)

Words & Phrases

  • It’s the only hot spring in the world where you can bathe with monkeys. (“There is … the only” feels awkward in English)

    • “This is the only …” or “That is the only …”

    • Using general "you" sounds more natural than "we" when describing what visitors or tourists in general can do.

    • There is a zoo where you can watch capybaras bathe.

  • Tread (Noun) = The grooved pattern on the bottom of a shoe or tire designed to prevent slipping (Synonyms; grooves, grip, sole)

    • Make sure your winter boots have deep tread so you do not slip on the ice.

    • You should check the tread on your car tires regularly to drive safely in the rain.

  • After two hours, the snow piled up about 30 centimetres. I had to drive home very slowly. It was snowing heavily. Luckily, I was able to put chains on my tires, but one time they came off.

  • Torture (Noun / Verb) = The act of causing severe physical or mental pain to someone (noun), OR to inflict severe suffering or distress on someone (verb).

    • Waiting for the exam results in complete silence was pure torture for the students.

    • The loud noise from the nearby construction site tortured the residents all night.

    • I don’t want to die by drowning, it seems like torture.

Appropriate Language

  • Winter boots, worn in winter and when snowy

    • Snow boots are heavy, insulated books for deep snow

  • (Rain / Rubber) boots, worn in the rain
