Words & Phrases

  • I went to the dealership to have my car inspected.

    • I took my car to the dealership for an inspection.

  • Who lives in the old house? (This is a general question asking for the identity of the person living there. You don’t know who it is.)

    • Does your daughter live in the old house? (This is a yes/no question. You already have a specific person in mind (your daughter) and want to confirm whether she lives there.)

  • I didn’t have any time to prepare for our lesson today.

  • Christmas Holidays (noun) = the period around Christmas when people typically take time off work or school for celebration and rest

    • We always travel to visit family during the Christmas Holidays.

    • The children were excited for the Christmas Holidays to start.

    • Many shops close early during the Christmas Holidays.

  • We went to a movie yesterday. (This focuses on one specific film you watched.)

    • We went to the movies yesterday. (“The movies” = an idiom for going out to the cinema in general.)

  • So the general rule is: heroine is tied to bravery, courage, or admirable action. If a story is mostly about humour, relationships, or everyday life, people usually just say “lead” or “protagonist.”

  • There was a twist at the end of the movie.

    • The lead actor is Takuya Kimura, and the lead actress is Chieko Baisho

    • The (lead / main) characters in the movie are a taxi driver and a woman.

Appropriate Language

  • In Canada, Thanksgiving is more focused on harvest and gratitude in general, without a strong tie to a national myth or story.

  • In the US, Thanksgiving has a stronger historical narrative tied to Pilgrims and Native Americans, and it’s heavily associated with family gatherings and parades like the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
