Words & Phrases

  • Peer pressure happens when your friends or classmates influence you to change your behaviour, clothes, or even your values. You might do something you wouldn't normally do just because "everyone else is doing it" and you want to fit in.

    • Negative: Being pressured to skip school, smoke, or be mean to someone.

    • Positive: Your friends encouraging you to study harder, try a new sport, or be kind to others.

  • The second movie wasn’t as good at the first. I preferred the original movie.

  • “Oshi” in casual English is probably “mv fav” (short form of “favourite”)

    • That movie was my fav.

    • I’m going to watch the new Meryl Streep movie. She’s my fav!

  • He’s a gifted pianist. He can remember any piece of music after seeing it once.

    • This is your first time baking? This is absolutely delicious and beautiful, you have a gift for baking! (= someone has a natural, impressive talent that they didn't necessarily have to work hard to get—it's like a "gift" from nature.)

  • My voice was all over the place while I was practicing at karaoke. (= your voice was inconsistent, hitting wrong notes, bad tone (flat or sharp) etc)

    • She consistently goes to karaoke twice a month every month.

  • Peer pressure (noun) pɪər ˈpreʃər / PEER PRESH-ur

Appropriate Language

The phrase "That’s all" is a very common and versatile expression in English.

  • When Finishing a List (At a Restaurant or Store)

    • "I’ll have a large latte and a blueberry muffin. That’s all.” (= I don't want to buy anything else.)

  • When Explaining a Reason (To Simplify)

    • "I just liked your shirt, that's all.” (= There is no other reason for my behaviour; don't overthink it.)

  • As a Dismissal (To End a Conversation)

    • I need this report on my desk by 5:00 PM. That's all.” (= This conversation is over; go back to work.)
