Words & Phrases

  • I’m not feeling great, so my head is foggy.

    • “Foggy” (adj) or “a brain fog” means your mind feels cloudy, and it is difficult to focus, think clearly, or remember things.

  • I have some allergy symptoms, like a runny nose, at the moment. (NOT “I have allergies”)

    • The back of my head, neck and shoulders feel weird and strange.

  • I wasn’t feeling great, so I was in bed all day yesterday.

    • I had a lazy day on Sunday. I was on the sofa all day watching TV.

  • One kilogram of plums makes one jar of jam.

  • How long does it take to reduce plums to a jam? (In cooking, "reducing" means simmering a liquid or wet mixture until the water evaporates, causing the food to become thicker, more concentrated, and intensely flavoured)

  • There is some dill in my garden that I use as a garnish for some meals.

  • Are there any foods that you hate?

    • I can’t stand eating boiled sweet beans.

    • I don’t like eel at all.

    • I used to eat sea urchin, but nowadays I can’t.

Grammar

  • While you cannot use "more" to modify a comparative, like “easier”, you can use intensifiers to show how much easier something is.

    • Learning English is much easier when you practice every day.

    • Using a recipe makes baking far easier.

    • This smartphone app is way easier to use.
