Words & Phrases

  • Your shirt looks like an aquarium. I can see a hammerhead shark, sunfish, and a pufferfish.

  • I bought this shirt and many others like it at Graniph.

  • I wear an AirRhythm undershirt in summer, and the rest of the year just a regular cotton one.

  • Outlet (noun); a retail store that sells goods directly from a manufacturer at discounted prices, often including surplus or older stock

    • We bought our jackets from a designer outlet outside the city.

    • Many tourists visit the outlet malls to find bargains on branded clothes.

    • She prefers outlet stores because they offer good deals on quality products.

  • Mall (noun); a large indoor shopping centre with many stores, restaurants, and often entertainment facilities, all connected by walkways

    • We spent the afternoon shopping and eating at the mall.

    • There’s a cinema and food court inside the new mall.

    • Teenagers often hang out at the mall on weekends.

  • I went to the Asao Sports Centre, on the way back I went to the Yaoko.

  • I like to use the treadmill at the gym, most of the time I just walk.

    • I’ve been thinking of getting Sophie a running wheel for exercise.

    • My hamster never used his wheel.

Appropriate Language

  • The supermarket sells lunch boxes. (This usually means containers used to carry lunch, like plastic or metal boxes — not the food itself.)

    • If you mean containers → use “lunch boxes”

  • The supermarket sells boxed lunches. (This clearly means prepared meals in boxes, such as bento or takeaway meals.)

    • If you mean food → use “boxed lunches”

Expressing Absence

  • I won’t be here next week.

    • I’ll be away next week.

    • I won’t be around next week.

    • I’m not going to be here next week.

  • I won’t be able to attend next week.

    • I can’t come to class next week.

    • I’m unable to attend next week.

    • I’ll have to miss class next week.

  • I am going to miss next week’s lesson.

    • I’ll miss class next week.

    • I won’t make it to class next week.

    • I have to skip next week’s lesson.
