Words & Phrases

  • She’s independent, and I think that is important.

    • As her mother, I would like a closer relationship.

  • Have you ever had liquorice candy?

    • Liquorice has a strong, distinctive flavour.

    • Some herbal teas contain liquorice root.

  • The meatballs are made from (ground / minced) pork and beef.

  • Giggle (verb / noun) = (verb) to laugh lightly in a nervous, silly, or restrained way / (noun) a light, quiet laugh.

    • The kids couldn’t stop giggling during the movie.

    • She gave a nervous giggle when her name was called.

  • The parking area is quite large. There are a lot of parking spaces.

  • The restaurant has quite a private rooms. It also has a large open dining area.

    • The restaurant is popular for celebration meals like graduation dinners and memorial dinners.

  • There were a lot of greens in the salad.

    • Greens (noun) = leafy green vegetables eaten as food, such as spinach, kale, lettuce, or baby leaf

  • Sorry, my phone has been ringing all day. I’ve gotten many calls today.

  • The water level is lower in the lakes, there might be water shortages later this year.

Election Vocabulary

People

  • voter – a person who votes

  • candidate – a person running for office

  • incumbent – the person who currently has the job

  • opponent / rival – another candidate

  • electorate – all eligible voters

Actions

  • vote – choose a candidate

  • run for office – try to get elected

  • campaign – activities to get votes

  • cast a ballot – formally vote

  • win / lose an election

Things

  • election – the process of choosing leaders

  • ballot – the paper or screen you vote on

  • polling station / polling place – where people vote

  • campaign speech – a speech to persuade voters

  • results – who won and by how much

Short Dialogues

A: I’m using my new pc.
B: Is it nice?
A: I am not sure. I don’t use it that often.
B: When did you get your new PC set up?
A: Last Sunday, the setup took about two hours.

  • Set up (phrasal verb) = to install, configure, or prepare a computer, device, software, or account so it is ready to use.

  • Setup (noun) = the configuration, arrangement, or combination of hardware, software, and settings used on a computer or device.
