Words & Phrases

  • I spent the morning at the Jindai Botanical Garden. There was a local bonsai exhibit there that I wanted to see.

  • Do you have a problem with condensation on your windows?

    • Yes, but I wipe down the windows every morning.

    • I would like to (renovate / replace / install) my windows with double-paned glass. (‘Install’ is the most natural in everyday English)

  • It’s a novel (based on / inspired by) a real story.

  • My Ficus umbellata has grown too tall, how can I bend it?

  • House plants can be really strong, and they don’t need a lot of care or watering.

  • I have to use a grow light to help my plants.

  • The two Yokozuna lost their matches the other day.

  • Catch one off guard (phrase) = to surprise someone by doing or saying something they were not prepared for.

    • The sudden question caught him off guard during the meeting.

    • I was caught off guard by the price increase at the till.

    • Her calm reaction caught everyone off guard.

  • The commentators comments (gave me anxiety / stressed me out).
