Words & Phrases

  • She doesn’t have patience to help me with my new laptop.

    • I had no patience helping my mom with her phone.

  • Karuizawa is closer than I (thought / expected), so I will go there on a day trip to see the concert.

  • Around that area new shops are opening all the time.

  • What cellular network do you belong to?

    • My (cellular / cell) phone is an iPhone.

  • I don’t mind taking buses when traveling.

  • If you want to go to the concert, you should buy tickets as soon as possible. (We use ‘listen to’ for music or a concert recording, but not when talking about attending the live event.)

  • If you want to see the musician’s face, you should sit in the first few rows.

  • Cellular (adjective) ˈsel.jʊ.lə / SEL-yuh-ler

Appropriate Language

  • A famous violinist who used to live in the city works with the city on various concerts throughout the year.

  • A famous violinist who used to live in the city collaborates with the city on various concerts throughout the year.

  • “Cooperate” is correct English, but it is more often used for governments, police, or problem-solving situations.

  • For music and culture, work with / collaborate with sounds more natural and friendly.
