Words & Phrases

  • I’ve heard that the flu is going around again. (= “to be going around” means many people are catching it at the same time)

    • Did anyone in your family catch it?

  • The snow banks around my hometown are pushing three metres tall.

  • I went and voted at the local city office.

    • I didn’t get my voter registration card yet, but I could register to vote.

    • What influenced the way you voted? The economy? Daily life? Rights?

  • Before, when I did the shopping, I’d spend about ¥2,000. Nowadays, it costs me ¥3,000.

    • Do you plan your meals ahead of time? I plan what to eat each day.

Appropriate Language

Election Vocabulary

People (nouns)

  • voter – a person who votes

  • candidate – a person running for office

  • incumbent – the person who currently has the job

  • opponent / rival – another candidate

  • electorate – all eligible voters

Actions (verbs)

  • vote – choose a candidate

  • run for office – try to get elected

  • campaign – activities to get votes

  • cast a ballot – formally vote

  • win / lose an election

Things (nouns)

  • election – the process of choosing leaders

  • ballot – the paper or screen you vote on

  • polling station / polling place – where people vote

  • campaign speech – a speech to persuade voters

  • results – who won and by how much
