Lesson Notes December 26, 2025 (FRIDAY ZOOM)

Words & Phrases

  • You can’t imagine how many cars there were at the shop.

    • Each place has twenty spaces for parking.

  • I bought a few kinds of flowers for New Year’s. (“Some kinds of” is grammatically correct, but in everyday English we usually say “a few kinds of” or just “some flowers.”)

  • Sophie is licking her paws and then washing her face.

  • I bought some flowers to put (at / by) the entrance of my house.

    • I bought some flowers for the entrance of my house.

  • Did you have a good Christmas? (We normally use Christmas in the singular, not “Christmas days”. If you want to include several days, we usually say ‘Christmas holiday’ or ‘Christmas break’.

    • Did you have a good Christmas break?

  • What seasoning(s) did you use on your roast chicken?

  • He drank half a beer. Any more and his face turns bright red.

  • My stomach was rumbling after eating fresh oysters. (It suggests stomach noise or discomfort)

  • I had a bad experience with oysters on the half shell.

  • I sometimes reuse cooking oil. I filter it and use it again.

  • My family was out last night, so i cooked dinner for myself. (NOT I cooked myself)

  • I cooked too much food, so I have some leftovers.

    • I often use leftovers for breakfast or lunch.

  • I bought a new phone because the battery in the old one drains so quickly.

Appropriate Language

  • “No alcohol (beer / wine / etc)” is understandable, but it sounds unnatural and is not standard English.

    • In everyday use, people say:

      • ‘non-alcoholic' beer

      • ‘non-alcohol’ beer in casual speech

    • You may also hear ‘alcohol-free’ beer
