Words & Phrases

  • The wrestlers walking by were imposing.

    • He was so bulky I had to step aside when he passed.

    • A towering man walked past me in the narrow hallway.

    • Someone huge came looming up behind me on the stairs.

  • I want to watch sumo in person next year.

    • Have you ever seen a famous person in person before?

    • I always watch it on TV.

  • They plan on registering their marriage at the city office.

Appropriate Language

‘Pain’ as a noun to talk about a feeling.

  • We often say have pain or feel pain when speaking generally or medically.

    • I have pain in my knee.

    • She feels pain in her lower back.

  • More commonly in casual speech, we talk about where the pain is.

    • I have a pain in my shoulder.

    • There’s a sharp pain in my chest.

    • I’m in a lot of pain today.

  • We often describe the type of pain.

    • It’s a dull pain.

    • It’s a sharp pain.

    • The pain comes and goes.

    • The pain is getting better or worse.

  • Things to avoid or be careful with.

    • We usually do not say my eyes started to feel pain.

      • Instead say my eyes started to hurt or my eyes felt sore.

    • We also usually do not say the pain happened.

      • Instead say the pain started, the pain came, or the pain suddenly hit.

Matchmaking and Dating Events

  • Speed dating

    • Short timed one on one dates where people rotate every few minutes.

  • Singles mixer

    • A casual social event for single people to meet and talk freely.

  • Matchmaking event

    • A general term for organized events designed to help people meet potential partners.

  • Blind date event

    • An organized event where participants are matched in advance, often based on profiles.
