Appropriate Language
‘Pain’ as a noun to talk about a feeling.
We often say have pain or feel pain when speaking generally or medically.
I have pain in my knee.
She feels pain in her lower back.
More commonly in casual speech, we talk about where the pain is.
I have a pain in my shoulder.
There’s a sharp pain in my chest.
I’m in a lot of pain today.
We often describe the type of pain.
It’s a dull pain.
It’s a sharp pain.
The pain comes and goes.
The pain is getting better or worse.
Things to avoid or be careful with.
We usually do not say my eyes started to feel pain.
Instead say my eyes started to hurt or my eyes felt sore.
We also usually do not say the pain happened.
Instead say the pain started, the pain came, or the pain suddenly hit.
