Topic: Prepositions of Place: at, in, on
In this lesson you can review the use of ‘at’, ‘in’ and ‘on’ when we talk about position or location.
Section A: at
We use ‘at’ for specific locations, or very near a specific location
at the end of the street
at the top of the page
at the corner
We also use ‘at’ for these special expressions
at home
at work
at school
at the top

We use ‘on’ for surfaces
on the wall
on the ceiling
on a page
on the floor
We also use ‘on’ for public transportation
on a bus

We use ‘in’ for enclosed spaces
in a building
in a box

We also use ‘in’ for open spaces which have boundaries
in the garden

Section D: context
I was in a shoe shop yesterday. (= inside a building)
Turn left at the supermarket. (= giving directions)
There’s still a little wine in the bottle. (= inside a container)
Did you read the washing label on the shirt? (= on the surface of a label)
There’s somebody at the door. (= somewhere near a door)
I can’t read the handwriting on this menu. Can you make it out? (= on the surface of the menu)

Prepositions of Place
We use in when something is in the water: in the sea, in the river, in the swimming pool, etc.
I prefer swimming in a swimming pool.
I’ll meet you at the swimming pool.
We say at the cinema when talking about watching movies there. We do not usually say in the cinema unless we mean physically inside the building.
This is the best movie you can see at the cinema now.
I lost my wallet in the cinema last night.
In the corner
The cat is sleeping in the corner of the room.(= Inside a space, where two walls meet.)
She put the Christmas tree in the corner of the living room.
There was a spider web in the corner of the ceiling.
On the corner
There’s a café on the corner of Main Street and King Street. (= A building or place that is located on the street corner.)
We bought ice cream from the shop on the corner of the street.
There’s a big tree on the corner of the park.
At the corner
I’ll meet you at the corner of the street near the traffic lights. (= A point or position where two streets meet, often for directions or meeting points.)
He was waiting at the corner for the bus.
I saw a police officer at the corner when I crossed the road.
