Lesson Notes August 18, 2026 (Vocabulary Building)

Words & Phrases

  • Vendor (Noun) = A person, business, or company that sells goods, products, or services

    • We bought hot snacks from a festival vendor near the park entrance.

    • Many local vendors set up tables to sell handmade crafts at the weekend market.

  • The earthquake last month was a human and financial catastrophe for the region. (= causing massive damage)

  • The company used a four-tonne truck to clear out all the furniture from the house.

  • I spent my summer going back and forth between my place and my parents’ old house.

  • I have a lot of my mother’s kimonos, but I don't know how to put them on by myself. (= I cannot dress myself in kimono)

City Life

  • There isn’t a lot of pollution, but littering has become a problem.

    • There is a problem with pigeon droppings in the common areas.

  • Crime

    • Scam (The Trick); Phishing emails, romance scams, fake online stores, phone imposter scams.

      • There are some telephone scams that target senior citizens.

    • Fraud (The Crime); Identity theft, credit card fraud, insurance fraud, tax evasion, corporate embezzlement

      • Someone opened a credit card in my name—it was identity fraud.

  • Disadvantages.

    • My area is hilly, so I have to lug groceries back home. (= carry a heavy object with a lot of effort)

    • The number of buses are shrinking. There used to to be four buses an hour, now it’s closer to two or three.
