Words & Phrases

  • The fuel surcharge is doubling.

    • The fuel surcharge is now twiceashigh.

    • The fuel surcharge is going up twofold. (More formal)

  • On Saturday there were many stalls along the river for the cherry blossom festival. (= food stalls, drink stalls, vendor stalls)

  • My husband was asked to help volunteer clean up along the Asao River once a month.

    • His (former / old) co-worker asked him to volunteer.

  • In some big cities, there is a large central library and several smaller library branches.

  • You (cannot /  bring drinks into the library, but a Thermos is ok.

    • He buys a coffee and puts it in his Thermos.

  • Do you water the garden? (NOT do you water in the garden)

    • I hate weeding the garden.

    • I water my bonsai twice a day in summer.

    • Watering plants is very important in summer.

  • The husband of one of my childhood friends is a potter. (Awkward: One of my childhood friends’ husband is a potter)

    • He is a third generation potter.

  • ¥380,000? I think that is quite reasonable for Hagi pottery.

    • Priceless tea bowls are often passed down within a family. (= from one generation to the next)

  • She learned how to dress herself in kimono when she was very young. Nowadays she still wears kimono often. (= put on kimono)
