Words & Phrases

  • She uses cardboard in her paintings.

    • After the move, the living room was filled with empty cardboard boxes that the kids immediately turned into a makeshift fort.

  • My class is mostly seniors. Everyone is much older than the teacher. (= people who are older than 65)

    • Some of the senior members have been in the group for 15 years. (= people who have been in the group for a long time)

  • Gunkanjima was developed by Mitsubishi in the late 19th century, it was a productive undersea coal mine.

    • One thing this town didn’t have was a crematorium for cremating people.

The Weather

  • 2 It’s not nice to sit outside when it’s freezing.

  • 4 A shower is a short period of rain.

  • 6 If it’s humid, the air will feel warm and wet.

  • 7 A mild winter means it is warmer than usual.

  • 2 I don’t mind wet weather if it stays quite mild. I just hate the cold.

  • 5 It was minus ten degrees in Nw York yesterday. It is often below zero in winter. It’s extremely cold.

  • 6 It’s getting very humid. We might have a (shower / storm / thunderstorm) later. (We cannot use “rain” here because “rain” is uncountable.)
